Assist. Teodor Vakarelski from the Institute of Information and Communication Technologies – BAS was interviewed by the Bulgarian science newspaper Azbuki (issue 25, June 2026), sharing insights into his research on eye tracking technologies.
Over five years of research, the team has developed two systems: one for person identification based on microsaccades – subtle, highly individual eye movements – and a newer system for recognising emotional states through macro eye movements. The technology offers a more secure alternative to fingerprints and passwords, as eye movement patterns cannot be falsified.
Potential applications include access control for buildings and devices, enhancing polygraph accuracy, monitoring the emotional state of drivers, and improving security threat detection at airports.
